Biography

Dr. Morris Leis began his career as a teacher at Ben Hill Middle School in Fitzgerald, Georgia. Continuing his tenure in the Ben Hill County Schools, he taught history, civics and geography at Fitzgerald High School and coached tennis, football and soccer. Dr. Leis accepted his first administrative position as the alternative school director and later he was named athletic director for the district. Continuing in administration, Dr. Leis served as an assistant principal and later principal at Ben Hill Elementary School. When completing his tenure in the Ben Hill County Schools he served as the principal of Fitzgerald High School.

Dr. Leis expanded his career goals and was named superintendent of the Wayne County School System in Jesup, Georgia. During his tenure the Wayne County Board of Education implemented the eBoard electronic meeting management system and were recognized for having achieved compliance with the Georgia School Board Association’s “Standards for Local Boards of Education.”

August of 2011, Dr. Leis was appointed superintendent of the Coffee County School System. Under his leadership working with faculty, staff, students, parents and community members, the system initiated a comprehensive strategic planning process that resulted in the Coffee County Schools becoming a Georgia Charter School System.

In December of 2013, Dr. Leis and the Coffee County Board of Education were invited to present at the Annual Georgia School Board Association (GSBA) Conference on effective governance. The presentation was part of a Student Achievement Workshop at which conference participants earned 6 hours of required board member training. The Coffee County Board of Education was recognized by GSBA in December 2015 as an Exemplary School Board.

In December of 2014, Dr. Leis was invited to serve as a member of the Governor’s Education Advisory Board as part of the Education Reform Commission. In October 2015, he presented as part of a panel discussion at a State Board of Education Retreat and was also asked to speak at the Georgia Education Leaders Institute in September of 2016. In April of 2016, he was invited by the American School Superintendents Association to participate in a congressional briefing at the U.S. Capitol in Washington DC.

Dr. Leis earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Social Science Secondary Education from Georgia Southern University in Statesboro. He went on to earn a Master's Degree in Educational Leadership from Valdosta State University. In 2001, Dr. Leis earned an Educational Specialist Degree in Educational Leadership K-12 from the University of Sarasota in Sarasota Florida. In 2005, he earned a Doctor of Education Degree in Educational Leadership from Argosy University in Sarasota.

Dr. Leis has participated in the Georgia Leadership Institute for School Improvement (GLISI) and the Georgia School Superintendents Association (GSSA), Superintendent Coaching Program. Dr. Leis has also completed the Institute for Planning, Funding and Budgeting, Facilities and Capital Outlay and the Human Resource Institute offered through GSSA.

Dr. Leis serves on the GSBA Superintendent Advisory Council and is a member of the board of directors for the Georgia School Superintendents Association and the Charter System Foundation. Locally, Dr. Leis is a member of the Douglas Rotary Club and serves on the Coffee County Boys and Girls Club Board of Directors.

Dr. Leis feels strongly that public education is one of the bedrocks of our democracy and that as an educator he is responsible for the wellbeing of all of the students under his supervision.
